Spearhead top game list

So yesterday we decided to make a games list to see what games people have missed and what they should play. Basically we listed games and everyone got to put a “recommend” and “do not recommend” as well as a “did not play” marker on the game. We summarized the list by adding together the games that got the most “recommended” votes. Any games with a “do not recommend” were taken out.

Top games list (not all)

Our top games are:

  • Diablo 2
  • Final Fantasy 7
  • Golden Eye
  • Portal
  • Soul Calibur
  • Street Fighter 2
  • Uncharted 2
  • Ice Climbers

This seems more like a ‘favorite games’ list as opposed to a ‘recommended games’ list. I’m a huge fan of Final Fantasy 7, but it has not aged well at all, and to be completely honest I don’t think an average gamer today would like it too much.

Same for Goldeneye; It’s arguably very well revered because it was the first console multiplayer FPS experience, however I don’t think it holds up very well when compared to modern ones, it’s something you’d only appreciate if you played before modern console FPS’s.

    Interesting list, nonetheless.

I’m bound to agree with Falaina. FF7 – being a 3D-game – doesn’t have the benifit of surviving the same way a pixel-game does. For instance, I have a much better time playing though FF6 (FF3US) than FF7. However! If you own the original game (since piracy is illegal) and get a playstation emulator, you can download a couple of pretty neat shaders. Then play the game in high resolution, adding a cartoon shader to make everything smooth and nice. This way you can rescue many of the ugly games and make them playable again. Because we all know that FF7 got quite a good and deep story.

That’s what I’m gonna do, and see if I get past the first few enemies this time before giving up due to the uglies.

I wonder why Playstation doesn’t learn a few things from emulators and throw such stuff into their consoles. PS3 could more than handle a good functioning emulator (since they killed their hardware support) and apply a few shaders on the games, making them look all shiny again.
